IPCC AR6: 5 questions to understand Chapter 7

If we want to tackle global warming, we have to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with energy production. Here are 5 questions to understand how.

💭 How can the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Uses (AFOLU) sector help in developing mitigation models?

The Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Uses (AFOLU) ensures that several different ecosystems receive the resources necessary while also fighting against climate change. Efforts made to prevent global warming through agriculture, forestry, and land remain to be one of the most efficacious options.

It is important that the Agricultural, Forestry, and Other Land Uses organization is able to continue to deploy the many measures they have already put in place to prevent further climate change. The AFOLU supports the pathway to stay within the limit 1.5◦C. 🌡️

When used correctly, the measures demonstrated by the AFOLU provide meaningful benefits that not only protect the environment, but assist in land management. However, if they aren’t implemented successfully – the resources needed to conserve the land like food, fuel, wood, and water won’t be as readily available, and can put these habitats or forests 🌳 in distress.

It is important to note that at times, the size of these agricultural lands require so much environmental attention to provide the correct resources for sustainability to fight against climate change – that it poses a threat to the fight against climate change itself.

In other words, if these ecosystems weren’t in danger – the time, energy, and resources could be spent elsewhere to positively impact the environment🌎.

Acknowledging these gaps in AFOLU and the preventative measures necessary, as well as the requirement for further research to create a better-suited plan for these lands in need of AFOLU’s services – would allow for better success in many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and overall benefit the environment.

❓ How much greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions does the AFOLU sector currently emit?

The AFOLU currently emits 13-21% of global total anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to the data from the past decade.

While the AFOLU can offer a reduced price to assist in avoiding further greenhouse gas emissions, they cannot account for delayed emissions from any other third party. Transparency could be increased if the measurements to provide the resources for the agricultural lands were clearly stated to prevent confusion and avoid claims of greenwashing.

Overall, the AFOLU has played a substantial role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and the actions they have taken to avoid further climate change have ultimately been deemed to be effective.

💪 Concretely, what is it possible to do?

Within the next 30 years, the measures necessary to protect forests and other ecosystems will grow to be a bigger financial concern than it is now.

The restoration of forests, peatlands, coastal wetlands, savannas, and grasslands will be a bigger burden than agricultural land (which includes cropland, soil, livestock, and resource management).

The easiest way to release the burden off of the AFLOU would be to contribute to the fight against climate change yourself. The most impactful way to do this wouldn’t be through driving a gas-fueled car or turning the lights off when you leave a room – but to change your diet to prevent food waste. A plant-based diet 🌱can help with this; as reducing your red-meat 🍖 consumption conserves water that could then be used elsewhere to help mitigate climate change.

Until these measures are implemented by the general public, the AFLOU will continue to work harder than necessary to preserve the natural resources necessary for forests 🌳and other agricultural lands.

💣 What are the potential barriers to the implementation or success of AFOLU mitigation measures?

There are a few things that could prevent the success of the preventive measures put in place by the AFOLU.

For example, if third world countries could be provided with assistance to help make use of the resources they do have, or even to provide them with renewable resources to prevent further waste – the AFOLU could be in much better shape than it currently is now.

Also, the activity of the AFOLU currently depends on financial sources 💸derived from the government – which ultimately aren’t sufficient enough to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the AFOLU. The AFOLU cannot meet their economic potential due to this fiscal setback.

Differences in values between cultures globally also provide incentive to de-motivate the AFOLU. However, the greatest threat to the success of the AFOLU is climate change itself.

As global warming continues to rise, more financial support, time, and energy will be necessary for the AFOLU to mitigate the continuous effects of climate change.🌎

📑 Is there any prerequisite to achieve mitigation in the AFOLU sector?

The prerequisites for success according to the AFOLU are dependent on the stakeholders 🤝involved in the environmental investment. The AFOLU requires continuous support from all of its stakeholders in order to hit their environmental goals.

However, this has been proven to be difficult to achieve, as to make this type of funding feasible would demand altering the overall financial flow by all parties involved. Reallocating the resources that are being provided to existing agricultural and forestry projects would benefit the overall mission to reduce carbon emissions.

It is also important to establish long-term successful policies that would provide these agricultural and forestry communities with sustainable measures : such as improved agricultural management, conservation, ecosystem services, improved forest management, supply chain management assistance, consumer marketing, and partnered efforts to prevent any environmental damage, such as leaking. 🌎

It is crucial that each policy is adjusted according to the region the service is being provided to in order to achieve the environmental goals necessary.

🔍 What do you need to remember?

In conclusion, the AFOLU is and can continue to be successful in mitigating climate change by providing the necessary resources to agricultural projects, but it would ultimately be more effective if the public could contribute to the fight against climate change as well – and if the financial resources could be properly reallocated.
